How to apply makeup correctly
Top tips for everyday makeup
Today I want to talk about how to apply makeup ‘correctly’.
Makeup should be fun
First of let me say that beauty trends change what is in/out of fashion. I think the most important thing with makeup is to do what suits you and what you enjoy. Makeup should be fun. Try trends out and new techniques, but go with what is best for you.
Beauty Trends
Trends in makeup and beauty vary more than just colour for the seasons. Techniques of application can vary too.
An example is sponges. Sponges in the 90s were useless so when I went to makeup school sponges weren’t used brushes for foundation application-fingers and traditional shaped brushes were. We are talking pre-Beauty Blender, even pre-buffing brushes.
What tools to use to apply makeup?
Every time these new tools came out they have become the ONLY tool to use and everything else has been said to be useless. However it worked before so it could still work better for you.
I think the best thing is to work out how the products and tools you already have work best for you.
Don’t rush out to buy more because of beauty bloggers. They won’t ever see pan on their makeup palettes and that is so wasteful. It doesn’t mean you have to immediately stop buying things, never try anything new and go a “#nobuy” strike. But just perhaps be more conscious of what you have and what you can already use. This is why I set myself the ‘buy less use more’ challenge. I will strive to see pan on products I already have, but if they are no good I will move on from them and work out what is best for me.
Start with skincare
The first, and perhaps most important step, is to prep the skin. This includes not only cleansing, toning and moisturising with good products suited to your skin type but also eating healthily and staying hydrated. Healthy skin looks betters and needs less makeup!
Steps to apply makeup correctly
Use primer. This is a product which is growing in popularity but still underused. Primer is effectively a new better moisturiser (use as well as not instead of) that helps your make-up last. Do your research to buy the best one for you, but you only need 1 not 10!
Colour correction goes under foundation and so can liquid/cream concealer for big blemishes.
Then apply the correct colour of foundation with a sponge, buffer, clean fingers or brush. Try the different tools and techniques to see what works for you!
Then you can apply liquid based concealers on the under eye area or small blemishes and blend!
Give it a moment and set with powder. I prefer one that is a similar colour to my foundation.
Next is contour, blush and bronzer-for which I would always use powder formula as easier to gradient.
You don’t want to go over board for the day to day and you just want to look like the best you so a little bit of colour blended in is best.
Highlight can look great if applied sparingly and correctly-forehead, down nose, cheekbone, chin but this all depends on your face shape. Traditionally we are taught that makeup is used to make faces look as oval as possible, but there is no need to conform to that beauty ideal. Do what you like the look of in the mirror!
Next is eyeshadow, and eyebrows. If you are going big colour some people do it first but there is no need for day to day minimal looks. Again eye shadow and liner comes in trends-smokey eyes, cutting crease etc-what you should focus on what looks good on you and your eye shapes. So watch some video tutorials, try out some different looks and colours and go with what you like! Don’t forget to pop on some mascara to frame those beautiful eyes!
You can then set with a fixing spray-try the simple and cheap ones too!
There we are a day to day make-up done.
Just remember make-up should be fun and make you your best you not into someone else!
