Top Tips for Press On Nails

How to apply press on nails can seem tricky.

If you have just started to wear press on nails or are thinking about giving them a go here is an easy way to apply them using glue.

What to use to apply press on nails?

Glue should keep your nails attached firmly for at least a couple of days. There are lots of different types of nail glues from single-use packets to droppers and brush-ons. How well different glues work does vary depending on your individual nail chemistry. Some people have dry nails, some oily and each product will work better or last longer for different nail types.

I have completed a review of various nail glues if you are looking for which to purchase. My own nails are neither dry nor oily, I sit somewhere in between. Elegant Touch Brush On is currently my favourite glue.

There are also quick fixes such as special tape and glue tabs if you want an application just for a special event for example. These basically work like double sided sticky tape between your own nail and the press on nail. Again nail chemistry will affect how long these last and how well.

Remember to follow any instructions on your glue packet first and foremost!

  • First remove all nail polish leaving nails clean.
  • Push back cuticles and neaten skin
  • Lightly roughen the nail surface with a file for better adhesion
  • Then put glue on both your nail and the press on
  • Apply the nail by starting at the cuticle and then press down moving towards the tip.

I have been busy reviewing nail glue products so will have a review post up soon.

How to remove press on nails?

When you are finished wearing them follow these simple steps to remove.

  • To remove turn your nail over and apply acetone remover with a brush around the edges
  • Gently loosen with a clean orange stick or similar
  • Repeat as needed. Do not push!
  • File any hard glue off the back of the nails or apply a small amount of remover.
  • Remove glue from own nails with remover.
  • Leave press ons to dry, then store
