Improve your beauty habits

Looking for some top tips to improve your beauty habits for the better? It’s not easy being green.

It’s very easy to get sucked into beauty purchases and habits without thinking about it. This can lead to products being piled up and a hole burnt through your wallet. If you are after some top tips to improve your habits check out my list below and be sure to comment your own!

If you want help to make real long-term change be sure to check out my resolution post where I break down making change manageable.

Tips to improve your beauty habits for the planet and your wallet

Avoid one-use products.

Obvious but easily missed. Whether it’s skin masks (they come in tubes and tubs too) or face wipes. There are much better product choices out there.

Empty out your products completely

Be prepared to cut bottles and packets open to get more of your favourite product out-sometimes you’ll be stunned how much is left!

Invest in the smallest silicone spatula you can find or a spatty and use to scrape every last drop out.

Buy less

Stop and think before you make purchases. Do you really need that eyeshadow palette/nail varnish or do you perhaps already have one similar? Remember that beauty products are chemicals not collectibles and do have expiry dates!

Why not try a low buy challenge?

Be aware of the ingredients

Instead of sheet masks try masks in tubs. When using sheet masks check what ingredients are in it. Don’t just fall for the Instagram hype of a mask made of plastic that does nothing. You don’t want that on your skin!

Avoid micro plastics and generally scrubs with large particles which can damage your skin. For a gentle but effective scrub try a chemical exfoliant. Check products are suited for your skin type before purchasing.

Check reviews before purchasing

Look up reputable reviewers-Bloggers, YouTubers, magazine writers or even Instagrammers (like me!). Find someone whose opinion you can trust and who tries products you are interested in. Be wary of relying on reviews on the website as these could be in exchange for points or vouchers so can be biased.

Go cruelty free AND Vegan

Check if the companies and products you use are cruelty free, eco friendly, vegan. Every certification means some different and words on a package can be twisted easily to give a false impression.

Invest in reusable options

Try and limit your use of cotton wool. Could re-usable cloths be used in the same way?

Instead of cotton buds try re-usable silicone ones. Re-useable cotton buds which, while yes they are made of plastic, will stop the need for the creation and disposal of one-use cotton buds. I love this set because it comes in a little case and has a set of two different shaped, and textured, cotton buds.

Use flannels or reusable rounds for makeup removal.

For nail polish removal if you do stamping for example why not use an old flannel or microfiber cloth with remover to clean your plates etc. This at least reduces down the use. If you have any other replacements for nail polish remover share them in the comments!
