How to donate hair to The Little Princess Trust

Sharing is caring!

My donation story

To donate long hair is a big step. After growing and caring for my hair for so long I knew it was time to use to help someone else, so I donate my hair to The Little Princess Trust.

The Little Princess Trust is a charity which collects hair to make wigs specifically for children. I’ve recently donated over 12 inches of hair which has been a dramatic change for me!

My hair-story

This actually all started almost 3 years ago when in the pandemic I decided to grow my hair for my May 2023 wedding (didn’t know the date at the start just knew it would be at least a year away). During this time of growth I invested in hair vitamins, good hair care products and practices such as no heat applied to my hair and no elastic bands of any kind.

This means I literally have only put my hair in a ponytail about 3 times in as many years when I used to put it up most days. I made a swap to clips in all possible sizes and at night I wore a hair net or wrap. I was dedicated to having lovely hair for the wedding and as it was so long (way longer than I’d want normally) healthy hair for donation too. Whilst it was a struggle during the heat, and my hair is much shorter now than I would choose, it was worth it to have a lovely style for my wedding and to be able to help someone else after.

Steps to donate hair, on the day

Once you’ve decided you are going to donate you need to make sure your hair is acceptable. You can find the requirements and steps to donate online here.

When you’ve found out if you can go ahead then it is time to book your cut! Fundraising is also a great idea as it takes £100s to make a wig. I didn’t personally fundraise as I did it so soon after my wedding however you can also make one off donations.

  • On the day the first thing you want to do is wash your hair with shampoo but use no conditioner or styling products.
  • Next your hair needs to be completely dry and knot free.
  • Decide on a length, separate your hair into sections and then band it up with 3 bands per section
  • Next it is time to chop
  • It’s always a good idea to have it styled afterwards as well!

After the chop

Afterwards, you’ll want to head The Little Princess Trust site and fill in a donation form.

Pop this in with your hair and take it to a Post Office to send it.

Once they’ve received your hair you will receive a certificate to the email you filled in on the form.

And then that’s your part all done!

Would you or have you braved the chop? Let me know in the comments!
