Top tips for healthy nails

Perhaps you set yourself a New Year’s resolution to grow your nails or perhaps you just want nice, neat looking hands. I’m always trying to grow my nails so they look nice, neat and perfect for nail art. My life is very hands on so I rely on a frequent nail care routine to protect them!

Top tips to help your nails grow

1. Keep them filed into a neat shape. I like a ‘squoval’ shape for my nails when growing them (flat on top with rounded corners) as I find its the strongest shape and easiest to keep all the nails the same length if one does break! Make sure to check them at least daily to keep them neat and chip free.
2. Protect them! Wear gloves when washing up or immersing your hands in water. Water makes your nails weak so leaving them more prone to breakages. Also be careful what you do with them don’t use them to open items like keyrings, packaging, cans etc.
3. Paint them. If you can’t wear nail colours at work then always keep a layer of clear polish on-my favourites include Avons Mineral Fix and Avon’s 24k Gold Strength as these leave nails protected but not so hard they shatter.
4. Use a base coat under coloured nail polish which will protect against staining, and help your nail designs last longer. Don’t forget a top coat too!
5. Moisturise your hands and nails regularly.
6. Most importantly nourish them with cuticle oil. Whilst writing this article I watched a video on Youtube by SimplyNailogical about growing your nails (go check it out, it is really informative!) and one thing she recommends is Jojoba oil. I have always tried to use cuticle balms and oils but they can be expensive and a faff. What Cristine from SimplyNailogical recommends is blending Vitamin E and pure Jojaba Oil and putting them in nail brush pens so you can just brush it on throughout the day! I have made a couple of these which I like so far, I also managed to get fairly large bottles on offer from Holland and Barrett which makes it cheaper to make my own.
